From 1990 until today, she finished numerous post doctorate courses for further qualifications in research, in clinical psychology (theories and therapies) and received numerous certificates. She has been teaching and coordinating many courses (pre-doctoral, doctoral and post-doctoral (RINO)). Her special field of interest is the human animal bond. Her research topics are: the development of the human-animal bond; the meaning of human-animal interactions for several groups of vulnerable people (e.g. elderly, demented elderly, traumatized children, mentally handicapped people, children with behaviour problems, autistic children, psychiatric patients; the influence of green care and nature on the quality of life of demented elderly; the relation between animal abuse and domestic violence. Her ‘animal buddy project’ in a psychiatric nursing home has been nominated for the ‘ Nationale Zorgvernieuwingsprijs 2005’, (National Care Renewal Award 2005). This project started in 2006 and is carried out in Rotterdam. Since 1990 she participates in many national and international conferences and working groups on the human animal bond.
Nowadays she is Professor in Anthrozoology at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, Open University Heerlen, the Netherlands.
Her current research is about children with autism and autism guide dogs, and veterans and PTSS dogs. She supervises and teaches 6 Phd students on the following topics: about elderly and visiting programs in nursing homes, children in schools with behavioral and learning problems and a dog intervention program; adults with autism and a dog assisted therapy program; an equine assisted program with horses (psychiatric patients); an animal assisted activities program with farm animals for children with autism and Down syndrome; a sustainable relationship with animals.
She supervises also many masterstudents.
